The willow oak has a very pyramidal form when young, with fine-textured leaves. Older trees greatly resemble a pin oak in form. Acorns are very small, almost tiny. This is a wetlands tree in nature and has a fibrous root system. It is easy to transplant and tolerates more root impact than most oaks. It has the same problem as pin oak with iron chlorosis, and does best in moderately acid soils.
