Hokhokken Foods was begun at the beginning of 2003 in Athens,
Ohio. The name is the original name of the river now known as the Hocking River, which drains
much of Athens, Hocking, and Morgan Counties in southeast Ohio. The name originally
reportedly meant "bottle-shaped" in the local Native American tongue, although its literal
translation, we suspect, was actually something like "gourd-shaped". In any case, the name was
due to a geologic feature in the river's course near the present-day Rockbridge (a bottleneck,
naturally). That's why the logo is a bottle.
Hokhokken should be pronounced "hock - HOCK - en".
Hokhokken is a sole proprietorship; John
Knouse is the proprietor. Knouse won an ACEnet food recipe contest in the fall of 2002,
which encouraged him to begin cooking as a business. The winning recipe was for the tofu
marinade (see the Tarvos condiments page).
